# Managing roles

## Create, edit, duplicate, and delete roles to control access for many users at once

Roles let you define access once and apply it to many people. Change a role, and everyone assigned to it updates automatically.

*Requires the Create and Update Roles permission, which is included in the Enterprise Admin role.*

### The three default roles

Every organization starts with three recommended roles. You can rename them and change their permissions at any time.

| Role | Applies | Includes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tech | Lab | Check In, Check Out |
| Supervisor | Lab | Check In, Check Out, Edit Inventory Item, Ordering Items, Inventory Audit, Manage Notification Settings, Review QMS |
| Enterprise Admin | Company-wide | Manage Company Profile, View Audit Logs, Create and Update Roles, View/Edit/Add User, Lock/Unlock User |

**Remember:** View Inventory isn't listed in any role. It's granted automatically at every lab a user is assigned to.

**Using Electronic Logs, PT Survey, or other products?** The default roles don't include their permissions. Add them to an existing role or create a new one. See [Permission reference](https://help.labsymplified.com/permission-reference?hsLang=en).

### Create a role

1. Go to **Manage Roles** and select **Add role**.
2. Give the role a clear name, ideally the job title it's for.
3. Choose where it applies: **In labs** (assigned to specific labs) or **Company-wide** (admin access).
4. Select the permissions it should include.
5. Select **Save**. The role is now available when you add or edit users.

### Edit or rename a role

1. In **Manage Roles**, select the role.
2. Rename it, add or remove permissions, or change whether it applies in labs or company-wide.
3. Select **Save**.

**Important:** editing a role changes access for everyone assigned to it. The screen shows how many users are affected before you save.

### Duplicate a role

Start from an existing role to create a similar one, then adjust it. For example, duplicate Supervisor to create a Lead Tech role with fewer permissions.

### Delete a role

You can delete a role that no one is using. If users are still assigned to it, reassign them first. Filter the Users list by role to find them.
